Protein Skimmer Site

The AquaC company has a few different model for you to choose from. They have the hang on back protein skimmers and also the in the sump protein skimmers. The Urchin protein skimmer is one of the in sump skimmers. The regular Urchin skimmer is rated for tanks between 20-75 gallons of water.

This is one of there most compact skimmer that goes in the sump. The Urchin come with the Maxi Jet 1200 pump. This unit has a very small foot print of 6″ x 6” (pump included) which comes in handy so you will still have plenty of room in your sump. The size of the unit is 19″ tall x 6″ wide x 2-3/4″ deep. It is best to have a minimum vertical clearance is 23″. There is also an optional collection cup drain you can get add to it.

The Urchin and the Urchin Pro are made from a translucent gray acrylic to slow the growth of algae and marine organisms. The pump attaches to the skimmer with a section of flexible hose. This way the pump can be moved into any position you need. You remove the collection cup from the skimmer by pulling it up and out of the unit. Make sure you have at least the required 23″ of vertical clearance under your stand for the Urchin.

The Urchin Pro looks a lot like the regular Urchin but the size is different. It is rated for tanks that are between 50-120 gallons of water. The Urchin Pro come with either a Mag Drive 3 or a Rio 1400 pump.Since this unit can be purchased with either pump the Mag Drive is the better one for performance.

The dimensions are 22″ tall x 7-1/2″ wide x 3-1/4″ deep. The foot print for the unit is 8-1/4″ x 7-1/2″(pump included). For the minimum clearance you will need 26-1/2 ” vertically. This unit is rated for tanks up to 120 gallons. The water level exit height is 15”. They do offer a collection cup drain that is optional.
